So I started POPs several days ago and it seems that I've received very few items of great use since then. Did anybody else have these troubles when first starting or am I doing something wrong?

By 'items of great use' do you mean Trade Goods? If so, then no, you're doing it right lol. Really when you start you should really be getting a lot of bamboo and chimes, then over time you unlock more regions which unlock more stuff

By items of great use, I mean that nothing is helping my travels in runescape so far. So just wait it out?

Also, it's sort of fun to do period, even if it didn't give any other benefits. At least, it is for me, I enjoy the management style thing.
Castle Wars is like that too, no actual in game advantage (trimming a comp cape after 5k games doesn't actually give you an advantage either, it's just cosmetic), yet people play it all the time-its fun and enjoyable in its own right-the true mark of a successful minigame I'd say.
