Here's the deal:- Squirtle helps phenomenally with the first Gym battle, since Brock uses rock pokemon, which water is strong against, but after about the first third of the game, he becomes less powerful in comparison to other pokemon one might capture.
- Bulbasaur, like squirtle, can help with the first part of the game due to his ability to use vine whip on ground pokemon, but that is not a move unique to just him, as there are many other grass pokemon which are available for catching in the first part of the game.
- Charmander is weak to the battles of the first part of the game and will struggle to defeat both Brock and Misty. This gives the player the option to train his or her other pokemon to be stronger, rather than just having one strong "starting" pokemon. The requirement of searching for and training the strongest pokemon is an aspect of the game that one does not receive one starts out with a pokemon that is strong against the pokemon used in the plot battles. Additionally, Charmander, Charmeleon, and Charizard are a rare source of fire-type in the earlier parts of the game, helpful for defeating bug trainers and the gym leader Erika.
Yes, starting with either Bulbasaur or Squirtle helps one with the first part of the game, but Charmander will make a strong pokemon to have throughout the entire game.

And, everyone knows this, you get a Nidorino in the grass before Pewter City, train it until it learns Double Kick or another move that is strong against rock, use that to defeat Brock. As for Misty, straight up Pikachu mate ;D CHARMANDER ALL THE WAY HOME DAWGSSSSSS

^Ok mitch first off unless you just blatantly pump up pikachu to like level 24-26 he will get owned by misty and in the leaf green/fire red i can be Brock with only charmander because he learns metal claw and pwns geodude and onix. Plus butterfree all the way!

And yes, you pump dat Pikachu up cause no matter what you gotta smack a ho down when you want dat badge.

in blue version i have defeated the elite four plus gary 47 times with my single level 99 charizard with cut flamthrower fire blast and fissure...... See this just shows that you're lying because after 47 times of defeating all of them it'd level up to 100, unless you decide to not save in which you wouldn't have defeated them at all

Get squirtle, rape the first two gyms, have it evolve to blastoise before the cruise-ship, smooth sailing from there. works like a charm, errytime

There's actually a legitimate way to battle Mew after completing the Nugget Bridge in Cerulean City in Pokemon Yellow. Plus that's where YOLO first originated from ;D
