the category is only based on windspeed. it was a huge storm overall compared to most hurricanes and it managed to hit one of the more densly populated areas on the coast. seems like a bad combination lol

Yeah...although the category is also based on the height and speed of the storm surge, far as I'm aware. And even if it is just the wind, that's like saying that the category of an earthquake is just saying "how much the ground shook."
Of course, with earthquakes, at least nowadays, the primary problem is fires started by broken pipes, etc.

Of course, with earthquakes, at least nowadays, the primary problem is fires started by broken pipes, etc. The main determining factor is wind speed because the storm surge is somewhat dependent upon the speed and directions of the wind, the damage done by Sandy was less about the speed and more about the size and the area affected Way2Go Kam!
